About Us

cityCURRENT, formerly known as the Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club (LPBC), is a privately-funded catalyst for Memphis and the Mid-South. A team of partner businesses, comprised of some of the largest and most influential employers in the world to mid-size and smaller firms, have come together to align resources and to host and underwrite the cost of more than 150 events each year and an array of media to impact our community.

The name cityCURRENT pays homage to three important aspects of our efforts. It draws from our media and television shows, like The SPARK and SPARK Awards, inviting you to join with us in being the electrical current that powers good in our community, to be the current of our city, the cityCURRENT. It also ties to our championing the Mid-South and the current of the Mighty Mississippi River. And, it refers to the here and now, the current impact of our events and efforts. As you will notice below and in some of the pictures featuring our old name and LPBC logo, the arrows - denoting two organizations coming together, meeting, and then growing together - are carried forward in our new logo. Those arrows have become the electrical current powering the good in our city. So, both the cityCURRENT name and logo help define where we have been and where we are headed as an organization focused on being a force for good!

Since the organization's establishment in 2005, cityCURRENT has served the community by hosting seminars and workshops, bringing in national guest speakers with our Signature Breakfast Series, hosting weekly Get Connected and executive lunches, and a variety of other events to provide valuable content and foster teamwork and collaboration among business, nonprofit, government, faith, and education leaders. These events are underwritten by our corporate partners, so they are FREE for the community to attend.

We then provide easy, turnkey opportunities for organizations and individuals to become more engaged in the community and we leverage our collective resources to make an impact through volunteer days, action projects, nonprofit tours, charitable contributions and more. Recent examples include tutoring after school, mentoring, scrubbing graffiti off of buildings and bridges, washing the feet of over 3,000 kids and providing them with new shoes and socks, providing a wounded Veteran Hero a mortgage free home, picking up over 90,000 pounds of trash from McKellar Lake and the Mississippi River, spearheading the Fallen Officer Memorial, creating and promoting the Power of the Dollar Campaign ("buy local"), launching a civic pride effort called "Memphis Rocks," and hosting a Film Festival screening and telethon.

One the media side, we produce and host television and radio shows, along with a podcast. We have two books that focus on achieving success in life and business while helping others in the process; and both books give back to support youth literacy programs. We also contribute to national media outlets and have a column with Forbes Magazine. All of our efforts are focused on spotlighting positive news and efforts, lessons learned, and tips and ways you can join in the effort and become an even greater force for good. Overall, cityCURRENT interacts with over 50,000 leaders on a weekly basis and has received international recognition for its innovative approach to corporate philanthropy. We are working hard each and every day to create a new template for how organizations and citizens can come together and make a difference; where engagement is free, volunteerism is easy, the good is celebrated, and giving back is woven into every event and effort.

"It is actually hard to put into words the feeling I had meeting and joining with the Memphis 'giving' community at the LPBC Signature Breakfast hosted by Smith & Nephew and in partnership with The Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence in August, 2014. To see living embodiments of real and true compassion and caring for others, all gathered in one place gave me some sense of the astounding range, depth and sustained good works the business community in Memphis is doing. It was clear to me
