The holidays are upon us! We just enjoyed the fellowship of Thanksgiving on Thursday followed by the kickoff of the holiday gift buying season on Black Friday. Tomorrow is Cyber Monday, which means many of us will be be scouring the internet searching for special gifts and deep discounts. On Tuesday, November 29, though, our focus turns from gift buying for family and friends to helping others in our community. Celebrated annually the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, the day is known as “Giving Tuesday” (#GivingTuesday); and it kicks off the charitable donation season as nonprofits seek support to fulfill their missions and meet the needs of those they serve here in our hometowns.
If you visit GivingTuesday.org, you’ll find that #GivingTuesday is a global effort. More than 700,000 people participated last year in over 70 countries; and more than $116 million dollars was donated to charities. Here in Memphis, thanks to the Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence and their many promotional partners, we have our own special version of #GivingTuesday known as “Grit. Grind. Give.” It’s a chance for us to give back and to donate funds that will help nonprofits working hard year-round in the Mid-South to make our community better, safer, stronger, and more vibrant. It’s an invitation to get out and serve, volunteering your time to help, to be part of the good. In fact, an hour of volunteer time equates to a $22 donation, so even if money is scarce, everyone can participate in #GivingTuesday and #GritGrindGive of their time. Lastly, it’s a chance to raise awareness by using the hashtags and promoting nonprofits, your giving, and service on social media, so that we can show the world why Memphis is continually ranked as one of the most generous cities in America.
Join the City of Memphis and Mayor Jim Strickland, who will be proclaiming Tuesday, November 29 as officially “Grit. Grind. Give. Day.”, along with Choose901, 901Rocks, JustMyMemphis, Volunteer Odyssey, Leadership Memphis, New Memphis Institute, iHeartMedia, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, our cityCURRENT and Lipscomb & Pitts Insurance, and the Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence for a day of generosity, a day of giving back. Learn more about #GivingTuesday and #GritGrindGive by visiting www.GritGrindGive.com. While on the site, you can also learn more about many local nonprofits that would benefit greatly from your donation and service. So, let’s show the world we’re #AllHeart in the Mid-South and let’s #GritGrindGive back on #GivingTuesday!
