Merry Christmas! From my family and all of our co-workers, partners, and friends at cityCURRENT and Lipscomb & Pitts Insurance, we wish you and your family all the best for a day filled with peace, love, joy, and hope. May you and your home be filled with the uplifting spirit and miracles that come with the true meaning of Christmas; and may this day bring you closer to the ones you hold dear, as you make special memories together.
I write this on a day when my wife left early in the morning to serve meals at St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen with her co-workers from Germantown Municipal School District. St. Mary’s Catholic Church Soup Kitchen, which is located at 155 Market Street in downtown Memphis, has been operating continuously since 1870. Six days a week they serve our community’s poor, homeless, and less fortunate; and they average more than 300 a day. Powered by “Dollar a Day” donations, the staff and volunteers provide a healthy dose of hot food and heartfelt hugs to nourish the bodies and souls of people – our neighbors – who deserve to know that individuals care about their wellbeing and who need to see the magic of this holiday season.
Like a sports team, we’re only as good as our weakest player. Sometimes bad things happen to good people and sometimes good people make poor decisions, but a helping hand can turn lives around. Many kids in our city and nation grow up with no role model or anyone saying “I love you” or “I believe in you.” A good coach and a strong team will help and rally behind all of their players, pulling out their best; and we need to do the same for our family, friends, and city, as a whole.
It’s about grace, hope, and unconditional love; and we can be that for each other. Perhaps it’s better said with this popular quote that my wife shared online after making some new friends this morning: “A person’s most useful asset is not a head full of knowledge, but a heart full of love, an ear ready to listen and a hand willing to help others.” So, let’s cherish this day and the precious time we spend with each other; but let’s also remember that we can spread this spirit – a heart full of love, a listening ear, and helping hands – wherever we go, with whomever we meet, all throughout the New Year ahead.
