This month on The SPARK our theme is “Opportunities.” We’ll learn more about a nonprofit helping Latinos in Memphis pursue a better life for themselves and their families; an organization equipping ex-offenders with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to obtain stable employment and economic empowerment; and a local, minority owned company focused on creating a better Mid-South through construction staffing and other job placement services.

An “opportunity” is defined as a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something…or a chance for employment or promotion. Each of our three guests this month, Latino Memphis, Economic Opportunities, and Flash Staffing are providing opportunities for a better life and career here in the Mid-South. Having a job gives us a sense of pride and purpose, it gives us meaning and identity; a job helps our family pay the bills and send our children to college. In other words, a job is much more than a job – it is an opportunity to feed a family, to make a difference, and build a better Mid-South. Remember that opportunities in life come from other people, so smile, try to remember and call people by their first name, and treat our fellow citizens like we would want to be treated…like family. We’re all in this together.
