Mission & History

Summary

cityCURRENT, powered by Lipscomb & Pitts Insurance is a privately-funded catalyst, comprised of a team of partner businesses that are working together to align resources and to host and underwrite the cost of more than 150 events each year and an array of media to enrich and impact the community. The organization has been serving the Mid-South since 2005.

Mission

To be a force for good.

Focus

Strategically, the cityCURRENT is focused on five key areas:

Strategic Corporate Philanthropy

Bringing businesses together to align resources and efforts to make a collective impact in the community;

Strategic Collaboration

Bringing all sides of our city - business, nonprofit, education, faith, and government - together to foster collaboration;

FREE Events for the Community

Making it easy for all citizens to become more engaged by offering FREE public events that enrich and give back;

Turnkey Volunteerism

Providing turnkey opportunities for individuals of all ages, along with companies and their employees to become more engaged in the community;

Positive Media

Providing a pipeline for positive stories to be shared and media outlets to spread good news and energy.

cityCURRENT is intently focused on serving the community and bringing organizations and citizens together to make a difference. So, in some capacity, we work with just about every business, nonprofit, school, civic group, church, government body, and organization in town. We strive to bring everyone together in order to provide enrichment events, foster collaboration and teamwork, champion positives, and empower giving back.

Culture

The foundation of cityCURRENT is rooted in weaving a philanthropic culture of giving back and collective impact into the normal routine, so that it is part of the DNA and fabric of our city. The organization has been internationally recognized for changing the model of business networking groups by re-inventing the template and showcasing the real power of corporate philanthropy where businesses come together with a higher purpose of impacting the community.

By engaging thousands in “plug-and-play” opportunities to personally grow, build stronger relationships, and give back in the process, the organization has been able to build a strong network of over 50,000 leaders and professionals who contribute to various efforts.

Structure

cityCURRENT is comprised of various partner businesses, which are each exclusive in their core business category and come together to underwrite the costs of these events and efforts. In this manner, cityCURRENT can invite the whole Mid-South community to participate in different events and programs at no cost to the public. The partners function as a brain trust for each other, sharing ideas and resources, while serving as a referral source for each other, as well. cityCURRENT thus offers both partner-only programs and events, as well as community events, which are open to everyone in the Mid-South.

cityCURRENT keeps in touch with everyone through a free email newsletter, weeklyFUEL, which shares upcoming cityCURRENT events that are open to the community, positive news and updates, job postings, nonprofit events, and much more. If you would like to receive updates and other special invitations, please subscribe to the email newsletter. If you would like more information on possibly becoming a corporate partner and playing a more magnified role in our efforts in the community, please email or call us.

History

cityCURRENT was launched in Memphis in 2005, as a part of a franchise agreement under the original organization name, the Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club. Lipscomb & Pitts Insurance, LLC helped found the organization as title sponsor. Lipscomb & Pitts Insurance, LLC purchased the rights and took full ownership in 2007, which allowed the organization to re-invent the model and turn what was once a simple business networking group, hosting only a handful of events each year, into a powerful team of businesses hosting more than 150 events each year and an array of media focused on impacting and transforming our community. After 11 years of being known as the Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club, and after such a tremendous evolution to become a community catalyst hosting over 150 free events each year and an array of media, the organization rebranded to become cityCURRENT in 2016, in order for the organization's name to align with its current impact, efforts, focus, and mission.

Testimonials

"It is actually hard to put into words the feeling I had meeting and joining with the Memphis 'giving' community at the LPBC Signature Breakfast hosted by Smith & Nephew and in partnership with The Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence in August, 2014. To see living embodiments of real and true compassion and caring for others, all gathered in one place gave me some sense of the astounding range, depth and sustained good works the business community in Memphis is doing. It was clear to me

"It was very revealing. I had no idea of the broad range of community outreach initiatives involved by the sponsoring members. This is the most positive movement that I have seen in Memphis in a long time and is surely needed. I really enjoyed my visit."
