Responsible Pet Ownership - Spay & Neuter Your Pets

Christine Abbey-Carlton, Treasurer and Cat Adoption and Foster Coordinator with the Shelbyville-Bedford County Humane Association, will discuses their mission and impact, their education and community outreach, spay and neuter assistance, the need for more foster homes and volunteers, their all-volunteer staff, and where you can learn more about their adoptions and adoptable pets.

The Shelbyville-Bedford County Humane Association (SBCHA) was formed in May 1978 as a result of animals freezing to death at the city pound the prior January. It is a non-profit 501(C)3 organization that is funded by contributions and fundraising events. It is run by an all-volunteer staff.

The mission at SBCHA is to improve the welfare of all animals in our community through various avenues. We strive to educate the public in responsible pet ownership, the importance of spay/neuter and to give voice and shelter to all the unwanted, abandoned, abused animals in our community.

Why Adopt a Pet?  When you adopt a pet from any reputable animal welfare organization, you are saving a life. You are not encouraging the indiscriminate breeding of dogs and cats for which there are simply not enough homes by buying an animal. If you buy a pet through a retail pet store, you are encouraging the proliferation of puppy and kitten mills. Photographs of animals for adoption through SBCHA can be seen here . All animals have had a check-up by a licensed veterinarian are up-to-date on shots and those of appropriate age have been spayed or neutered.

There are many ways you can help SBCHA.

  • Become a volunteer
  • Become a foster home
  • Donate money
  • Donate items
