Porter-Leath’s Generations and 50th Anniversary of Foster Grandparents Program

Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Judy Rautine, Generations Manager with Porter-Leath, who highlights how the Memphis, Tennessee based nonprofit empowers children and families to achieve a healthy, optimal and independent lifestyle, and then details some of their specific programs, including Generations, the home for AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Senior volunteers at Porter-Leath. Generations helps to fill the gap, bringing children in need together with adults and seniors in a mutually-beneficial service experience. During the interview, Judy talks about the AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors who serve as Foster Grandparents in local classrooms. The AmeriCorps Seniors are role models, mentors and friends to children with exceptional needs, and the program provides a way for volunteers age 55 and older to stay active by serving youth in their communities. Judy details how the program is expanding into Desoto County in Mississippi, and spotlights the legacy and impact of the program with its 50th anniversary. She also talks about how the community can get involved to support their efforts.
