Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Sandra Harris, Grants and Content Manager with PENCIL, along with Sara Aronson, Senior Project Manager of MNPS Tutoring Programs, who both highlight the nonprofit that links community resources to Metro Nashville Public Schools to help young people achieve academic success and prepare for life. PENCIL (Public Education Needs Community Involvement and Leadership) partners with businesses, community groups, and other organizations to bridge the resource gap in Metro Nashville Public Schools that directly impact day-to-day learning. During the interview, Sandra and Sara discuss PENCIL’s programs, including their DG PENCIL Box (Dollar General PENCIL Box), which is a free teacher supply store where teachers can shop for the tools they need to run an effective classroom, at no cost to them. Sara highlights how PENCIL recruits, trains, and places community volunteers with students who need a little extra help and personalized support in reading or math through their Accelerating Scholars Program. She discusses how the program works and how you can volunteer to help a student either in-person or virtually. Sandra also highlights some upcoming events, including the PENCIL Summit on October 7 and Principal for a Day on October 27.
