Last week we shared some of the public nominations that came in for The SPARK Awards 2016. Since there were so many and they all brought a smile to my face, let’s keep sharing and inspiring more good. Below are three more nominations.
For Alpha Omega Veterans Services: “Alpha Omega Veterans Services (AO) has served the acute needs of veterans for about three decades, with distinction and without blemish. From its modest beginning (one home for veterans care), AO has steadily expanded over the years and now has facilities throughout the city. Typically, it provides decent housing for veterans troubled with readjustment to society after combat, drug and alcohol abuse, and other needs...while providing training and encouragement programs to prepare and assist the veterans for re-entry into society. And what a wonderful, sustained track record they have!”
For Dr. Cathy Schanzer: “Dr Cathy Schanzer has been traveling to West Africa since 1988 to restore sight to the blind. Many of the patients have been blind due to cataracts for 20 plus years. In the last few years she has averaged around 500 patients per year. Southern Eye Institute is a Memphis based non-profit and this year granted a Scholarship to a junior at Memphis Catholic High School. Dr. Cathy travels to West Africa twice a year to perform her surgeries in the year round clinic that was setup in 2006. I believe Dr. Cathy Schanzer is a wonderful role model on how to be selfless with your life and make how to show how one person can truly make a difference.”
For Barry Roberson: “Barry Roberson uses his business, Breakaway Running, to support not only the Memphis Running Community but the greater Memphis/MidSouth Community. In addition to hosting free group runs several days a week, every year Breakaway provides free training programs for those training for The St. Jude Half Marathon and Marathon. When Officers Sean Bolton and Verdell Smith died in the line of duty within days Barry organized memorial runs that not only paid tribute to the Officers' lives and sacrifices, they raised thousands of dollars that were donated to the families of the Officers…Breakaway also provides a location for runners to drop off gently used shoes which are donated to schools and shelters. Last year Breakaway served as a drop-off point for a grassroots drive to collect clothing, blankets, and other items that were given to a Christmas time drive to provide for our homeless community…”
