More Than an After-School Program

Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Denise Carothers, Director of Events and Community Engagement with Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee, who highlights how the nonprofit organization is focused on helping all young people succeed through curriculum-based targeted programs and high yield activities designed to help Club members reach their priority outcomes: academic success, healthy lifestyles, and good character and leadership.

During the interview, Denise talks about the organization’s history dating back more than 120 years and how they have expanded over the years to serve more than 7,000 youth and to operate 14 Club locations in Davidson and Williamson counties with an additional expansion to Montgomery County planned in 2025. Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee provides a safe place, professional caring staff, fun and friendship, and high-impact youth development programs on a daily basis during critical non-school hours. Denise highlights their “DUB100” strategic vision to double the number of youth served to 10,000 by the year 2026, and how they are preparing youth for great futures with their They will be 100% for their great futures with their 5 Readyā€˜s: Ready to Read, Ready for Class, Ready to Graduate, Ready for Career, and Ready for Community. She discusses some of their key strategic initiatives and programs, including their Reading Success Academy with after school and in school reading support, their Code Academy providing free immersive coding experiences, and their Industry Clubs where students can enhance their career and skill development, earn certifications, and gain exposure to new career opportunities. She wraps up talking about ways the community can support their efforts and support the youth.
