Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Revida Rahman, co-founder of One WillCo, who highlights the nonprofit organization and their efforts to ensure public schools in Williamson County, Tennessee, are a place where children of all races and ethnic backgrounds can thrive.
During the interview, Revida shares some of the backstory and what led her and co-founder, Jennifer Cortez, along with other parents, to launch the organization to create positive, system-wide solutions that would offer more support and ease the extra burdens on students, staff, and families of color. She talks about some of the serious issues identified, including bullying and racial harassment, isolation, too few Black students being accurately identified as gifted or assigned to AP classes, and not knowing how to report issues. Revida shares some of her own personal experiences with her sons and talks about the positive progress being made through their education, advocacy and events. She discusses some of the recent events where youth come together and have an opportunity to build relationships and strengthen community through a deeper appreciation and respect for each other, and how the community can get involved and support their efforts to make sure that all students feel safe, loved and have access to opportunities where they can learn, grow, and thrive, which ultimately, creates a generational ripple of benefits for the community.
