In this episode of the cityCURRENT Show, Andrew Bartolotta sits down with Darcy Haggith, founder of Polar Joe, to explore the science of protein, muscle health, performance, and healthy aging—and how decades of experience in science, business, and endurance sports ultimately led him to create a protein-forward cold brew coffee.
Darcy brings a unique perspective to the conversation. With a background in biology and microbiology and more than 30 years of experience across operations, quality, and research and development, his career has included work with companies like Pfizer as well as involvement in more than 40 research projects focused on muscle health and healthy aging.
He’s also a longtime endurance athlete who has competed in Ironman events, marathons, multi-day cycling events, and rowing.
Those two worlds—science and endurance sports—eventually collided.
After an experience surrounding the 2006 Ironman Lake Placid, Darcy became involved with the Canadian operation of Infinit Nutrition. His work eventually connected him with researchers and Canada’s high-performance sports community, including renowned protein researcher Dr. Stu Phillips, and shifted his thinking beyond simply fueling athletic performance to a much bigger question:
How can protein help us maintain strength, mobility, and quality of life as we age?
Whether you’re an athlete trying to improve performance, an entrepreneur interested in building a science-backed consumer product, or simply someone who wants to remain strong and active as you get older, this conversation offers a fascinating look at why muscle health isn’t just about looking fit—it’s an important part of living well.
