Chris Blair highlights The Listening Room Cafe in Nashville and podcast, Stories Behind The Songs

Host Jeremy C. Park interviews Chris Blair, founder and owner of The Listening Room in Nashville, who discusses the venue’s 20-year history and impact on the music industry. Chris explains that he moved to Nashville in 2003 to pursue a music career, eventually transitioning from performing to songwriting after realizing he could better contribute to the creative process. The inspiration for The Listening Room Cafe, which he opened in 2006, came from his observation that songwriters and performers were not being properly compensated at existing venues, leading him to create a space with high-quality sound, freshly-made food, and fair payment for performers.

Chris explains that what makes a Writers Round special is the combination of paying artists well and creating a supportive community environment, noting how the venue helped launch careers of artists like Lainey Wilson and Brett Young when they were struggling. The listening room operates seven days a week with 16 shows per week, including evening shows at 6 PM and 8:30 PM Monday through Sunday, plus additional brunch shows on Saturdays.

Chris explains that while the venue offers occasional lunch and happy hour shows, evening performances are the main focus. He describes the artist booking process, noting that his booking manager handles talent relations and receives about 50 emails daily from performers wanting to play. Chris shares his approach to identifying emerging talent, explaining how he recognized artists like Chris Stapleton before they became famous based on their unique qualities rather than just technical skill.

Chris shares a memorable moment with Garth Brooks performing at The Listening Room, where Garth spent time shaking hands and signing guitars for fans. Chris noted how Garth’s music influenced his decision to pursue an artist career, and mentioned that he had the opportunity to perform on stage with Miranda Lambert the previous night.

Chris discusses his podcast “Stories Behind The Songs” which he started three years ago, releasing episodes weekly. The podcast features interviews with songwriters where they share detailed stories about their songs, including the writing process, challenges in the music industry, and how songs came to be performed by specific artists. The podcast took a brief break while preparing for The Listening Room’s 20th anniversary, sold out celebration at the historic Ryman Auditorium earlier this year.

Chris and Jeremy discuss the importance of sharing stories behind songs to enhance their meaning and impact. Chris provides contact information for his podcast “Stories Behind The Songs with Chris Blair” and The Listening Room at https://listeningroomcafe.com.
