Nashville Adult Literacy Council – Helping Adults Improve Literacy

Teaching Nashville adults how to read, write, and speak English since 1982.

Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Kim Karesh, CEO of Nashville Adult Literacy Council (NALC), who highlights the nonprofit organization’s mission and efforts to help Nashville adults with the reading, writing, and English-speaking skills they need for the life they want.

During the interview, Kim discusses how literacy transforms the experience of living and how we understand the world around us and also the way we are understood in the world. She talks about the two different populations the organization serves with people learning to read and write for the first time, and then the adults who are learning to speak and understand English. NALC offers services through online classes and also matches a volunteer from the community to be a tutor for an individual learner. Kim talks about the power of volunteerism and shares how she started at NALC as a volunteer and still treasures the friendship made with the individual she tutored. She shares goals for the future and how the community can get involved to support their efforts, and more.
