University of Toledo student, Sara Lee, discusses importance of volunteerism, shares lessons learned

Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Sara Lee, a graduating senior at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, who recently was honored as a scholarship recipient for her volunteerism and impact in the community with the 2024 Doing Right Spotlight event hosted by the University of Toledo Family Business Center. Sara Lee is graduating with a major in Marketing and minor in professional sales.

During the interview, Sara shares how volunteerism was part of her childhood with her family and church volunteering at local nursing homes to perform and lift the spirits of residents. She talks about the impact of seeing residents brought to tears after performances, and one pivotal conversation with a resident whose own musician daughter wouldn’t come in and perform. Those experiences growing up paved the way for Sara to organize her own visits and performances at nursing homes and then, during the pandemic, led her to reach out to friends and musicians around the country, asking them to send her videos of their playing songs, which she then edited and shared to make a positive impact. Sara accumulated over 1,700 volunteer hours throughout high school, and it was a powerful lesson in that even in difficult times, we can still find ways to bring joy to others and make a difference. Sara wraps up with words of advice to other youth and college students on the power of purpose and volunteerism and the impact of the scholarship from the Doing Right Spotlight through the University of Toledo Family Business Center.
