Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Brandi Jack, Chief Operating Officer for Nashville Diaper Connection, who highlights Tennessee’s oldest and largest diaper bank.
During the interview, Brandi shares how the nonprofit organization started back in 2013 and how it has grown to currently support around 6,000 babies each month, providing approximately 4 million diapers each year through community partnerships. An adequate supply of clean, dry diapers is a preventative approach to infections, neglect, abuse, unnecessary tension and physical and emotional stress. Experiences in the first years of life are extremely important for a child’s healthy development and lifelong learning. The brain grows to 90% of its adult size by age 3. Brandi talks about the “power of a diaper” and how they collect diapers and distribute them through their community partners. By being intermediaries, the organization limits duplication of services, reduces administrative expenses and works collaboratively to solve a basic human need at the community level. If struggling families need diapers, they often have other needs as well, which are best addressed through their partner agencies and their full continuum of care. Brandi talks about the importance of collaboratively working with and through their partners, and then discusses their newer programs, Clinic Connections, which puts diapers in clinics to support preventative healthcare, and Diapers for Diplomas, which offers a diaper scholarship to parenting students. Brandi wraps up talking about how the community can get involved and support their efforts to make a difference.
