Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Dr. Michael Golinko, Delta Dental of Tennessee’s Smile180 Foundation Director of the Cleft and Craniofacial Program, Chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Program Director of the Craniofacial Fellowship, Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery, Oto-Head & Neck Surgery, & Neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who shares some of his medical background and how he became focused on using a collaborative approach to help meet the unique and complex needs of children with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial disorders, and using research and innovation to enhance clinical care and outcomes.
During the interview, Dr. Golinko discusses how the Cleft and Craniofacial Program at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt has served patients and families for over 30 years, and how it has become a regional and national leader in personalized, ‘pre-natal to prom’ and now ‘pre-natal to pension’ care of children born with facial differences. Dr. Golinko discusses how facial differences can impact a child’s life and development, and how they are able to work with families during pregnancy to identify and then immediately start addressing things once the child is born. He highlights the team of experts and their collaborative approach, which makes the process easier on the child and the family, and also helps drive innovation and positive outcomes.
Dr. Golinko also talks about the importance of support from Delta Dental of Tennessee’s Smile180 Foundation, which established the Directorship in March 2022 and supports the Cleft and Craniofacial Program in numerous ways. He wraps up talking about their expansion efforts to support more children across Tennessee and neighboring states, how other companies and the community can support their efforts, and how seeing the children they help grow up to live healthy, productive, successful lives filled with beautiful smiles is something that continues to drive his team each and every day.
