On April 15, 2013, as thousands gathered to celebrate Patriots’ Day in Boston, two homemade bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others.
Dr. Natalie Stavas was just blocks away, approaching the finish line of her fifth Boston Marathon. When she heard the blasts, she didn’t run away. She ran toward the chaos.
She immediately began helping victims on the scene by administering CPR, applying tourniquets and triaging the wounded in the middle of one of the most devastating domestic terrorist attacks in recent U.S. history.
Her courage captured the nation’s attention. She was honored by President Barack Obama and featured by Anderson Cooper and Katie Couric. The Improper Bostonian named her one of “Boston’s Best,” and The Boston Globe recognized her as “2013 Bostonian of the Year” for her heroic response.
Today, Dr. Stavas continues her lifesaving work as program director for Child Protection Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego. She mentors young doctors and leads award-winning research focused on caring for vulnerable children. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, she’s also been studying how the virus affects children’s health and well-being.
This is a story of bravery, purpose and running toward the people who need you most. In her keynote, Dr. Stavas will share her powerful story and offer transformational lessons in courage, purpose, empathy and leadership under pressure, so we can take action and make bold decisions when it matters most.
