In this episode of the cityCURRENT Show, Andrew Bartolotta sits down with Jordyn Hay, Program Director and Lead Facilitator at SongwritingWith:Soldiers, to explore the powerful connection between storytelling, music, and healing.
SongwritingWith:Soldiers hosts nationwide retreats for veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, and their families, pairing participants with professional songwriters to help transform personal experiences into songs. Through creative expression, mindfulness, peer support, and community, the organization is helping people process trauma, build connection, and rediscover hope.
A Harvard University pilot study found participants experienced a 77% increase in hope and optimism following retreats, and in 2024 alone, more than 1,100 songs were written with veterans and first responders.
In this conversation, Jordyn shares:
• How songwriting creates a safe outlet for healing and storytelling
• The emotional impact of community and creative expression
• Her personal journey with trauma, wellness, and post-traumatic growth
• The organization’s mission to expand support for veterans and families
• Exciting initiatives ahead, including outreach to Native American and Vietnam veterans
This episode is a moving reminder that healing can happen through connection, creativity, and the courage to share your story.
